    Pakistan inflation rises as food and education gaps persist

    LAHORE, PAKISTAN / RankWire.AI / – Government price cuts are failing to reach many shoppers in Lahore, where retailers continue charging well above official rates. The gap covers chicken, vegetables and fruit across several markets. Consumers are facing the increases as Pakistan deals with renewed inflation and higher fuel costs. Official data show that household expenses are rising across several categories, adding pressure to families already paying more for basic food and transport.

    Authorities set the official chicken meat price at Rs461 per kilogram after cutting the notified rate by Rs22. Retail sellers still charged between Rs520 and Rs570 per kilogram. Potatoes carried an official price of Rs27 to Rs30, yet market rates reached Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes were listed between Rs130 and Rs180 but sold for Rs250 to Rs300. Onions also exceeded their notified ceiling, with retail prices reaching Rs200 to Rs220.

    The difference extended across other common foods. Spinach was officially priced between Rs57 and Rs60 but sold for as much as Rs120. Farm cucumbers carried an official range of Rs85 to Rs90, while shops charged up to Rs150. Fruit prices showed some of the largest gaps. Certain varieties of dates carried notified prices between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram. Retail prices, however, ranged from Rs800 to Rs2,400.

    Inflation adds pressure across household budgets

    Pakistan Bureau of Statistics figures show annual consumer inflation reached 11.1% in August, compared with 9.2% in July. Urban inflation stood at 10.4%, while rural inflation reached 12.2%. The agency also recorded an 8.62% annual rise in its weekly sensitive price index through September 10. Onions climbed 125.52% from a year earlier. LPG rose 55.42%, diesel increased 45.26%, petrol gained 39.10%, and wheat flour rose 30.18%.

    The federal government approved targeted fuel support on September 14 through the Economic Coordination Committee. Eligible users of two-wheelers and three-wheelers will receive Rs500 each week under the program. Qualifying owners of cars up to 800cc will receive Rs1,000 every 10 days. The scheme limits assistance to non-commercial users and one vehicle for each owner. The Ministry of IT and Telecom will operate the digital Fuel Pass System used to manage the payments.

    Education gaps remain part of wider economic strain

    Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data also show large education gaps across the country. The national literacy rate stands at 63% for people aged 10 and older. Male literacy is 73%, compared with 54% for females. Urban literacy reaches 74%, while the rural rate stands at 55%. Punjab records a literacy rate of 68%. Nationally, 28% of children aged five to 16 remain outside school, according to the latest household indicators.

    Public spending on education reached Rs962 billion in fiscal 2025, equal to 0.8% of gross domestic product. Punjab’s out-of-school rate stands at 21%. Those figures do not establish a direct link between education levels and retail price violations in Lahore. They do show another major social challenge alongside rising household costs. Punjab authorities continue issuing official commodity prices, while consumers in Lahore still face substantial differences between notified rates and the prices charged in markets.
